Campaign Reports & Updates

On 18 May 2004, the Supreme Court of Canada in a 6 to 3 decision, ruled that the third party restrictions in the Canada Elections Act were justifiable, despite the fact that they infringed on freedom of speech. The judgment is available here. As a result of the "gag" law being upheld, Environment Voters will be revisiting its campaign plans for the upcoming federal election. More to follow.

Andrea Horwath, the NDP candidate in Hamilton-East wins with a landslide. Environment Voters is pleased to have been able to help Ms Horwath win and to send a message to the Liberal Party that could wildlife and environmental policies matter.

Canadian federal election expected to be called for 28 June, 2004. Environment Voters will be campaigning in four electoral districts: West Nova, Halifax West, Victoria, Edmonton Centre. More details to follow when election called.

Environment Voters campaigns in the Ontario, May 13th Hamilton-East by-election, supporting the NDP candidate Andrea Horwath. The issue was the "political" cull of cormorants. Download radio spot here.

Environment Voters intervenes at Supreme Court of Canada: Environment Voters was granted leave to intervene in Attorney General of Canada v. Stephen Harper -- the Canadian government's appeal against lower court decisions striking down third party gag provisions of the Elections Act. See the EV factum. Represented by Peter Jones of the Toronto law firm of Paterson, McDougall, oral arguments were made on 10 February 2004. Judgment has been reserved.

Ontario Election 2003: Environment Voters volunteers are helping in Oshawa and Huron-Bruce: telephone and door-to-door canvassing. For more info or to help contact Liz White

Ontario Election 2003 radio spots. Environment Voters radio spots begin running in Huron-Bruce and Oshawa on 23 September Wingham CKNX FM and Oshawa 94.9 "The Rock" and 1350 "Oshawa's Oldies."

Ontario Provincial Election called for Thursday, October 2, 2003. Environment Voters will be campaigning in Oshawa, to defeat the Progressive Conservative candidate Jerry Ouellette who is the Minister of Natural Resources, and in Bruce-Huron to defeat Progressive Conservative candidate Helen Johns, the Minister of Agriculture and Food. The targeted candidates have records that are antithetical to a clean, healthy environment and safe, humane agricultural practices. More to follow.

Perth-Middlesex federal by-election campaign: Environment Voters has endorsed and will be campaigning for the election of Brian Innes, the Liberal candidate in the Perth Middlesex federal by-election on May 12. Environment Voters has sent a letter to Brian Innes and issued statement of endorsement. EV is running newspaper and radio ads, and EV volunteers will be conducting door-to-door and telephone canvassing.

Ontario Minister of Natural Resources Targeted: Environment Voters will be campaigning in the next Ontario election to defeat Jerry Ouellette the Minister of Natural Resources. See EV fund raising letter. Environment Voters is currently completing various analyses to determine which Progressive Conservative candidates will be targeted. The Ontario Progressive Conservatives have not improved their environmental policies since Ernie Eves became Premier, and there is not indication they intend to do so. They have ignored the lessons of Walkerton.

Statement: Environment Voters and Animal Alliance announce in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador new political strategy to end seal hunt.

Announcement: 13 November 2002, Environment Voters and Animal Alliance of Canada will announce in Newfoundland a political initiative to end the Canadian Seal Hunt. Environment Voters is currently preparing its campaign for the next Ontario provincial election. The preliminary list of electoral districts where Environment Voters may be campaigning is now available.

News (16 May): Progressive Conservative candidate, Al McDonald declared official winner in Nipissing -- wins by 19 votes over EV-supported candidate George Maroosis, Liberal. (See Nipissing EV campaign page.)

News (14 May): Environment Voter's candidate in Windsor West -- Brian Masse, NDP -- wins. (See Windsor West EV campaign page.)

News (2 May): Ontario PCs win in Nipissing with a 9 vote margin. Judicial recount required by law. (See Nipissing EV campaign page.)

Environment Voters is campaigning in two May 2002 by-elections: an Ontario by-election in Nipissing (2 May) and a federal by-election in Windsor West (13 May). A full report on each by-election will be posted after election day.

Environment Voters radio spot began airing in March 2002 to raise campaign funds and pressure Liberals to improve environmental policies.
