Federal Windsor West by-election campaign

News (May 14): Environment Voter's candidate -- Brian Masse, NDP -- wins in Windsor West. A Liberal upset, the seat was held by Herb Gray for the Liberals for 39 years. A final EV campaign report will follow in a few weeks. Final results are posted on Election Canada's web site.

Environment Voters is campaigning in the federal by-election in Windsor West to "punish" the federal Liberal government for its poor environmental record.

Perhaps the most damning indictment of the effects of the Liberals' environmental policies on the people of Windsor is found in the study, "Community Health Profile of Windsor, Ontario, Canada: Anatomy of a Great Lakes Area of Concern," written by two eminent scientists — Michael Gilbertson, a Canadian government scientist, and James Brophy with Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers. The report was published in Environmental Health Perspectives (December 2001) and reveals that Windsor has Ontario's highest rates of illness and death.

It is becoming evident that the Liberals are trying to avoid ratifying the Kyoto global warming protocol. The 1993 promise to enact federal endangered species protection election is still unfulfilled. Even efforts to improve the animal cruelty provisions in the criminal code are being resisted by influential back benchers; some of whom want to make common cause with the Canadian Alliance.

The Environment Voters campaign includes an Open Letter distributed to selected polls in Windsor West, a 30 second radio spot, and a volunteer-based telephone canvassing bank.
