That’s why I’m supporting Animal Alliance of Canada and Environment Voters’ political strategy to end the seal hunt: holding Ministers of Fisheries and Oceans personally, electorally accountable for the federal government’s seal hunt policy. AAC and EV will be campaigning in all future federal elections to defeat — in their home electoral districts — Ministers of Fisheries and Oceans who do not work to end the seal hunt. You have failed to make sealing humane. A 2001 study by five independent veterinarians found that the seal hunt causes "considerable and unacceptable suffering," and that sealers may have skinned alive as many as 50,000 seals. You are threatening the harp seal’s survival. You approved a Total Allowable Catch that is unsustainable. It is over 6 times higher than would be allowed under the United States Marine Mammal Protection Act. Your political decisions have made the seal hunt the largest, cruellest, and most unsustainable in over three decades. Politics — not morality, not science, not conservation, and not economics — decides the government’s seal hunt policy. Therefore, only politics — electoral politics — will convince you and the government to end the seal hunt. Canadian seal hunt is the largest, cruellest, marine mammal slaughter in the world, and I want you to end it.
